Why Visit Austin
Circuit of the Americas was purpose-built for F1 and it shows. The dramatic elevation change at Turn 1 (which rises over 40 metres) is one of the most photographed corners in the sport, the multi-apex Esses in Sector 1 were inspired by Silverstone's Maggotts-Becketts, and the stadium section at Turns 15-18 generates incredible crowd noise. It's the only purpose-built F1 venue in the USA.
Austin itself is the 'Live Music Capital of the World' — and race week aligns with concerts, festivals, and an energy that blends Texan hospitality with counter-culture cool. Sixth Street's live music bars, world-class barbecue, breakfast tacos from trailers, and the general weirdness of Austin ('Keep Austin Weird' is the city motto) make this one of the most fun race weekends on the calendar.
Local Tips
October in Austin is usually ideal — 22-28 °C with low humidity. Occasional rain is possible. Mornings can be cool. The circuit has limited shade in general admission areas, so bring sun protection.
Austin's public transport is limited — most visitors use ride-hailing (Uber/Lyft). Official COTA shuttles run from downtown. Post-race traffic is infamous — expect 1-2 hours to leave the circuit. Set up a ride-share meeting point in advance.
Barbecue is religion: Franklin BBQ is the most famous (expect 3+ hour queues) but La Barbecue and Micklethwait are equally good with shorter waits. Breakfast tacos from Veracruz All Natural are essential. The circuit itself hosts big-name concerts post-race.
Go to Sixth Street on Saturday night for live music — every bar has a band. The circuit hosts major headliner concerts (past acts include Eminem, Taylor Swift, Billy Joel). Buy the weekend package to access all entertainment.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is COTA good for first-time F1 fans?
Excellent. The purpose-built facility has good sightlines from most areas, huge screens, and strong food/entertainment offerings. The Turn 1 grandstand at the top of the hill is the standout seat.
How bad is the post-race traffic?
Very bad. Plan for 1-2 hours to leave the circuit. Many fans stay for the post-race concert, which serves double duty as traffic management. Set a ride-share pickup point away from the main exits.
Are there concerts at COTA during race weekend?
Yes. COTA hosts headliner concerts on Saturday and Sunday nights as part of the race weekend package. Past performers include major global artists. Tickets are typically included in weekend passes.
